2. Inspect Every Mounting Plate
The escutcheon plate — the decorative cap where each end of the bar meets the wall — should be flush against the surface with no gaps. Run your finger around the full perimeter of each plate. Any separation between the plate and the wall is an entry point for moisture, and moisture that gets behind the plate during the summer has had months to do damage.
Look also for discoloration around the mounting points. Dark staining, particularly any gray or black coloring at the edges of the plate, can indicate mold growth in the wall cavity behind the fixture. This is worth having a professional evaluate.
4. Run the Water and Check for Surprises
Turn on the shower and let it run for a few minutes while you watch the walls and floor around the grab bars. You are looking for water that tracks toward the mounting points or pools in unexpected places. A bathroom that has sat without use all summer can reveal drainage issues, slow drains, or subtle shifts in how water moves that were not obvious when the house was active.
5. Smell the Air
This sounds simple, but it matters. A musty smell in a bathroom that has been sealed up all summer can indicate mold growth behind the walls, under the floor, or in the grout and caulk. It does not always mean there is a serious problem, but it is worth paying attention to. If the smell persists after you have run ventilation and cleaned the visible surfaces, a professional assessment is a reasonable next step.
